(2022) Multilingual China National, minority, and foreign languages
Multilingual China explores the dynamics of multilingualism in one of the most multilingual countries in the world. This edited collection comprises frontline empirical research into a range of important issues that arise from the presence of 55 official ethnic minority groups, plus China’s search to modernize and strengthen the nation’s place in the world order.
Topics focus on the dynamics of national, ethnic minority and foreign languages in use, policy making and education, inside China and beyond. Micro-studies of language contact and variation are included, as are chapters dealing with multilingual media and linguistic landscapes. The book highlights tensions such as threats to the sustainability of weak languages and dialects, the role and status of foreign languages (especially English) and how Chinese can be presented as a viable regional or international language.
Multilingual China will appeal to academics and researchers working in multilingualism and multilingual education, as well as sinologists keen to examine the interplay of languages in this complex multilingual context.

Multilingual China: National, Minority and Foreign Languages
(2015) Trilingualism in Education in China Models and Challenges
This book examines language policies and practices in schools located in regions of China populated by indigenous minority groups. It focuses on models of trilingual education, involving the home language, Putonghua (Mandarin Chinese, the national language), and English (the main foreign language). Special attention is given to the vitality of the minority home language in each region and the effects of teaching and learning these languages on students’ acquisition of Mandarin Chinese and English, as well as their overall school performance.
The book also explores the unique case of Cantonese in Guangdong, where the local Chinese ‘dialect’ is strong yet different from Putonghua. Employing a new approach to researching sociolinguistic phenomena, it presents a methodology derived from studies of bi/trilingualism in European societies, tailored to the trilingual context in China. This methodology includes policy analysis, community language profiles, and school-based fieldwork, providing rich data for a multilevel analysis of policy-in-context.

(2011) English Language Education across Greater China
This volume is the first to offer a comprehensive and, at the same time, in-depth examination of the spread of English and English language education across Greater China. It consists of two parts. Part 1 presents rich sociolinguistic data for easy comparisons between mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, while Part 2 explores in depth the phenomena inside mainland China to provide contrastive analysis of English language use and education in economically booming areas such as Shanghai and Guangdong and underdeveloped regions like Xinjiang and Yunnan. With the descriptive, comparative and analytical accounts of different territories ranging from nation-states to small villages in remote areas, theories on the spread of English, second/third language acquisition and identity are challenged with new concepts proposed and established.

English Language Education across Greater China
(2009) Becoming Interculturally Competent through Education and Training
The development of intercultural competence is the avowed purpose of teachers and trainers in commercial training and further and higher education. However, the approaches are often seen as different and even in opposition. This book demonstrates that there is complementarity in ‘education’ and ‘training’ both in theory and in practice.
The first group of chapters focuses on the analysis of intercultural experience and the competence needed to succeed in such experiences. The following chapters describe the practice of courses in both commercial and educational contexts, highlighting that ‘education’ and ‘training’ are indeed complementary, despite the existing tensions and differing expectations among learner groups.

(2007) Bilingual Education in China: Practices, Policies, Concepts
This work compares and contrasts two strands of bilingualism in China, one for minority nationality groups, the other for majority. It examines the history, policy, philosophy, politics, provision and practice in bilingual, trilingual or multilingual education involving Mandarin Chinese, English, and minority languages. This volume brings a mixed group of researchers together to discuss issues in bilingual or trilingual education for the majority and minority nationality groups in China and to explore the relationship between the two. Articles range from reports of bilingual or trilingual education projects in remote minority regions to discussions about Chinese-English bilingual education in major economic centres.
